Building Sciences

Environmental

Pillar Engineering provides assessment and design of building envelopes for existing buildings and new developments.  Evaluation methods determine the current condition of a building, including analysis of building materials, moisture or air leakage issues, or specific concerns in a certain area.  Through professional knowledge and experience in the building science industry, Pillar provides sound engineering solutions, ensuring the optimization of building performance.

Pillar Engineering provides Environmental Site Assessments to CSA standards in order to ensure proper risk management of subsurface contaminants and to help the client make an informed decision about property value and potential liability. Our reports are accepted by lending institutions throughout Canada.

Structural Engineering

Mould & Asbestos Assessments

The structural design and integrity of an entire system requires in-depth knowledge and experience of both static and dynamic loading, and the structures available to resist them.  Sound engineering practices ensure that complex modern structures are able to support and resist the loads they are subjected to.  Our structural engineers have a broad understanding of different materials, systems and methodologies.  Through the creative manipulation of construction materials and forms, combined with the underlying scientific and mathematic principles, our structural designs and solutions ensure practical buildability, adherence to safety requirements and satisfaction of architectural criteria.

We provide complete structural engineering design and drafting services for residential, commercial and industrial clients. From initial consultation, to full structural specifications and designs, to facilitating and supervising construction, and quality assurance by our building sciences team, we can see your project through to completion.  We understand the importance of complementary design and structural components.  In collaboration with clients, architects, designers, contractors, government agencies and other disciplines, we develop the best structural solutions to not only meet engineering demands, but also to preserve the integrity of the architectural design and meet the functional requirements of the project.
Mould contamination is an increasingly common problem. If moisture is present, fungal growth can occur on almost any surface, including building materials, causing potential adverse health effects.  Pillar Engineering provides investigations and fungal sampling, conducted in accordance with standard methods and protocols.  We offer comprehensive documentation combined with professional expertise.  Our reports address health concerns, including findings and observations, any sampling data and recommendations for mould abatement. Our certified mould specialists for inspection and removal of mould and their spores work in a timely fashion.  Once abatement work is complete, we conduct air sampling to verify the quality of the air and the health of the environment.

Asbestos is a fibrous mineral product, strong enough to resists high temperatures, chemical attack and wear.  It insulates well against heat and electricity.  Asbestos was commonly used in many building materials in residential, commercial and industrial properties built before 1990. (Some websites said 1980) Asbestos can be found in shingles, exterior siding, floor tiles, sheet vinyl flooring, drywall jointing compounds, mortar walls, ceiling tiles and texture coatings, thermal tape and various types of insulation. Asbestos poses health risks with frequent and prolonged exposure to airborne particles, which are released into the air when asbestos-containing products break down through deterioration or during a renovation or repair, when they are cut.  Asbestos fibres lodge in the lungs, causing scarring that can ultimately lead to impaired lung function and lung or lung cavity cancers.

Hazardous Material

Hazardous Material Audits

Hazardous material audits include comprehensive sampling, assessments, documentation and recommendations.  They are a vital tool for ensuring compliance with regulations, as well as worker, occupant and environmental safety. Pillar Engineering and Inspection provides timely and budget-mindful solutions to assess, manage and remediate hazardous materials.

Hazardous Material Assessments

These assessments are required in all Canadian provinces and territories and are vital to diligently managing regulated hazardous materials.  Hazardous materials normally requiring assessment include asbestos, lead, mould, silica, Polychlorinated Biphynyls (PCBs), Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), mercury and halons. Assessments are conducted in three phases.
Abatement Management

Hazardous materials can impact renovation or demolition activities by complicating time lines and budgets, and resulting in unwanted concerns of penalties and liability issues. We provide abatement management that ensures your project moves forward effectively, while addressing all hazardous materials concerns.  Our assessment process provides documentation in regards to specific concerns that required remediation, guiding the development of construction contracts and plans. Once abatement work is completed, site inspection of hazardous materials abatement is undertaken, with worker safety and compliance with environmental and safety regulations as the priority.  In addition, we provide site inspections of engineering controls, procedures and safety measures, as well as air sampling and analysis, by qualified, experienced professionals.
